Further motion accessories

Everything from a single source: from the braking resistor to the TwinSAFE drive option card

Suitable accessories for a clean and well-organized control cabinet that facilitates both maintenance and expansions.
Suitable accessories for a clean and well-organized control cabinet that facilitates both maintenance and expansions.

As a single-source provider of system components, Beckhoff offers a comprehensive portfolio of accessory components that ensure smooth functionality and user-friendly handling. In addition to power supply, braking energy management, and connection technology components (pre-assembled cables, cables sold by the meter, and connectors for field assembly), a range of supplementary products is available for building complete drive solutions:

  • Motor chokes for applications with particularly long cable lengths
  • Shrouds and shielding brackets for EMC-compliant connection of large servo drives (from AX5160) and compact drive technology
  • AX-Bridge for easy and error-free installation of an AX5000 DC link network
  • Encoder option cards for expanding the supported feedback systems of the AX5000
  • TwinSAFE drive option cards for implementing extensive safety functionalities
  • Elastomer couplings for our stepper motors
  • Magnetic encoder system as a simple feedback system for linear motor applications

The safe connection for every application

Intelligent energy recovery for maximum efficiency

The AX8820 universal regenerative unit is used to feed regenerative energy back into the supply network. It is compatible with the AX8000 multi-axis servo system, AX5000 digital compact servo drives, and third-party devices. The energy is regenerated sinusoidally, preventing the grid distortions that are common with block-shaped regeneration. For effective energy management, the regenerative energy is initially stored in the DC link. The recovery into the supply network does not begin until shortly before the overvoltage threshold of the connected devices is reached. Multiple energy regeneration modules can be operated in parallel to ensure the regenerative power is optimally adapted to the requirements of the machine. No EtherCAT communication is required to carry out energy recovery. EtherCAT is used only for parameterization – for example, to adjust voltage levels for connected devices. Using EtherCAT extended diagnostics, it is possible to analyze the actual regenerative energy. The online data can be used to record the timing of the machine processes. This allows operators to analyze whether staggering the machine processes could improve machine efficiency.

Braking resistors

When braking a motor load, kinetic energy is converted and routed as electrical energy via the DC bus into the DC link capacitor. Depending on the drive system, the capacitors installed directly in the drive or in the power supply module store this energy to make it available to the system for new acceleration processes. The increasing DC link voltage must be limited if the capacitance of the capacitors in the system is not sufficient. This is achieved by applying the DC link voltage to braking resistors, converting excess energy into heat and safely limiting the voltage in the process. An integrated braking resistor is installed in our power supply modules as an option. If this is insufficient, AX2090-BWxx external braking resistors can be connected to the system. The Motion Designer can calculate the braking power for a system with multiple drives and determine whether the internal capacitance and braking power are adequate for the application. If necessary, the Motion Designer proposes a suitable braking resistor.

Increasing the power quality through filters and chokes

Beckhoff servo drives are already equipped with integrated mains filters and chokes for compliance with standards in industrial environments. They have been tested and certified in accordance with EN 61800-3 for category C3 use. If increased requirements are placed on the power quality, this can be achieved with upstream mains filters and mains chokes.

Mains filters reduce the interference voltage generated by the drive system. Depending on the quality of the filter, category C2 or C1 can be achieved. The total motor cable length connected to the drive system must always be taken into account.

  • AX2090-NF5x-xxxx for AX5000
  • AX2090-NF8x-xxxx for AX8000

Mains chokes mitigate voltage and current peaks and reduce or mitigate power harmonics.

  • AX2090-ND5x-xxxx for AX5000
  • AX2090-ND8x-xxxx for AX8000
